Sunday 1st July
Arrive in Shetland and settle into Cheyne House (www.cheynehouseshetland.com).
Whilst waiting for everyone to arrive and get ready you can watch for otters from the large sea facing lounge windows or head out to photograph local birds in the area. It is a good place to do wildflower photography as the area around Cheyne House is not grazed during the summer months
When everyone has arrived we will head down to Sumburgh Head to photograph Puffins and Seabirds and then to St Ninians for some Sunset photography.
Monday 2nd July
Visit to Fetlar - Britains premier site for the beautiful Red Neck Phalarope boasting over half of the countries breeding population. Throughout the summer months Fetlar is alive with high numbers of breeding waders, Great and Arctic Skuas, Golden and Ringed Plovers to name a few. Fetlar is a very quiet and peaceful Island and is also known as the Garden of Shetland and during summer the Island is alive with wildflowers.
Tuesday 3rd July
An early chartered boat trip will take us to Mousa which is a small Island to the east of Shetland. Here we will primarily photograph Black Guillemots and other birdlife such as Fulmars, Great and Arctic Skuas, Shags and Terns. We will also visit the Mousa Broch where the Storm Petrels nest in the summer and try a couple of Landscape Photos.
We will return to the mainland at lunchtime time and will eat locally.
After lunch our boat charter will continue as we will head back to the Pier and this time head to the Noss Cliffs to see the Gannet colony. Other seabirds to photograph will be Guillemots, Kittiwakes, Shags and Skuas.
Wednesday 4th July
Today we will visit Sumburgh Head to photograph Puffins which is always enjoyable – a gift shop and tea room can be found at Sumburgh Head. The south of the island has lovely beaches which can be great for landscape photography or photographing waders along the water edge.
After a great day out we return and have some dinner and prepare for a midnight trip to Mousa to see the Storm Petrels returning to the Mousa Broch. (This trip really depends on the weather)
Thursday 5th July
Head to Eshaness to photograph waves and water and stunning volcanic cliffs – an option would be to try Slow Shutter Speeds so bring your filters. Fulmars perform well here and it is a great opportunity to photograph them in flight or just sitting on the cliffs snoozing. Sea pinks found around the cliffs give any picture a delightful punch of colour.
We will book a table at St Magnus Bay Hotel for lunch which is situated locally.
Friday 6th July
An early start as we head to Hermaness to photograph Gannets in flight and sitting on the cliffs. You will also find Great Skuas on their breeding ground displaying well. Puffins can also be seen walking in and out of burrows bringing in eels.
Saturday 7th July
We are free to re-visit a favourite location after breakfast before checking out of Cheyne house and heading back to either the Airport or the Ferry terminal.
After each day out we will make time to look at photos and answer any questions that you may have. This week is aimed at taking photos of the best that Shetland has to offer - any level of photographer is welcome - we will help you to capture special memories both with your mind and your camera.
Clothing:
Whilst we will be in the summer months the wind can be strong with a chill so please come prepared with suitable clothing. Walking boots definitely required but also wellingtons if you can fit them in are a good idea as we will be on the beaches
Equipment:
We won’t be disturbing nesting birds but a mixture of lenses to include wide angle, macro if you have one and a longer telephoto or prime lens. If, however you just want to take images with your point and shoot camera we will help you get to the best position to achieve best possible results.
